Facts about “Hot Tub Rash”

“Reduce the Risk of Hot Tub Rash:
• Remove your swimsuit and shower with soap after getting out of
the water.
• Clean your swimsuit after getting out of the water.
• Ask your pool/hot tub operator if disinfectant (for example, chlorine)
and pH levels are checked at least twice per day—hot tubs and pools
with good disinfectant and pH control are less likely to spread germs.
• Use pool test strips to check the pool or hot tub yourself for adequate
disinfectant (chlorine or bromine) levels. CDC recommends for pools
and hot tubs that:
» Pools: free chlorine (1–3 parts per million or ppm)
» Hot Tubs: free chlorine (2–4 ppm) or bromine (4–6 ppm).
» Both hot tubs and pools should have a pH level of 7.2–7.8.”

There is no link between vaccines and autism.

autism-facts-graphic2_1

“There is no link between vaccines and autism.
Some people have had concerns that ASD might be linked to the vaccines children receive, but studies have shown that there is no link between receiving vaccines and developing ASD. In 2011, an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on eight vaccines given to children and adults found that with rare exceptions, these vaccines are very safe.

A 2013 CDC study [PDF – 204 KB] added to the research showing that vaccines do not cause ASD. The study looked at the number of antigens (substances in vaccines that cause the body’s immune system to produce disease-fighting antibodies) from vaccines during the first two years of life. The results showed that the total amount of antigen from vaccines received was the same between children with ASD and those that did not have ASD.”

Child Injury

Drowning, Injury, & Sun Protection

lifeguard

“Before going to the beach, visiting the pool, launching your boat, or heading out into the sun, it’s important to understand how to avoid injuries and protect yourself from the sun. The resources listed on this page will help you learn how to protect yourself and your family from these public health issues.”

Parasites

“Naegleria is an ameba (single-celled living organism) commonly found in warm freshwater (for example, lakes, rivers, and hot springs) and soil. Only one species (type) of Naegleria infects people: Naegleria fowleri.

Naegleria fowleri infects people when water containing the ameba enters the body through the nose. This typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater places, like lakes and rivers. The Naegleria fowleri ameba then travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys the brain tissue.

You cannot be infected with Naegleria fowleri by drinking contaminated water. In very rare instances, Naegleria infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources (such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or contaminated tap water) enters the nose, for example when people submerge their heads or cleanse their noses during religious practices, and when people irrigate their sinuses (nose) using contaminated tap water. Naegleria fowleri has not been shown to spread via water vapor or aerosol droplets (such as shower mist or vapor from a humidifier).”

How to Prevent Latex Allergies

3be476b0ecbdcf8f2358b4ef61733e70
“Latex products are made from natural rubber, and sensitivity can develop after repeated exposure. Limiting exposure to latex can help prevent allergic reactions for both home healthcare workers and their clients.
EMPLOYERS SHOULD
• Provide workers with non-latex gloves when there is little contact-us with infectious material.
• Consider the use of vinyl, nitrile, or polymer gloves appropriate for infectious materials.
• Provide reduced-protein, powder-free gloves, if latex gloves are selected for use with infectious materials.
• Provide training to workers on latex allergy.
• Promptly arrange a medical evaluation for workers with symptoms of latex allergy. Provide these employees with non-latex gloves”.

How to Prevent Violence on the Job

HRDA_031716-300x236
“Home healthcare workers can be vulnerable as they face an unprotected and unpredictable environment each time they enter a client’s community and home. The spectrum of violence ranges from verbal abuse, to stalking or threats of assault, to homicide. Verbal abuse from the client, family members, or people in the community is a form of workplace violence. Verbal abuse may be subtle, such as asking for help beyond the scope of the job (such as with cleaning), or it may be obvious, such as complaining about job performance or worker appearance—or even threatening to cause harm.”

How to Prevent Exposure to Unsafe Conditions

“Home healthcare workers may encounter unsanitary homes, temperature extremes, homes without water that is safe to drink, or hostile pets. EMPLOYERS SHOULD establish criteria for acceptable home environments, including hygiene, temperature, access to water, and pets. Train employees on the concept of acceptable home environments and what they should do if a home they visit is unsanitary. EMPLOYEES SHOULD Follow their employers’ guidelines for reporting of unacceptable home environments. UNSANITARY CONDITIONS Hygiene may be an issue of concern for home healthcare workers in some client locations. Unsanitary homes may harbor pests such as rodents, lice, bedbugs, or mites. These unsanitary conditions can cause contamination of medical supplies and equipment, as well as spread disease and infection.”

Spine Safety and Body Mechanics

Spine Safety and Body Mechanics

642x361-Treating_Spinal_Stenosis-Exercise_Surgery_and_More

“Back pain is a common problem for those who work in an industrial setting. A significant number of injuries occur each year, but many of these injuries can be prevented through proper body mechanics and back safety techniques. Statistics show nearly 8 out of 10 in the general population will experience a back disorder at some time in their life. Most are caused by a combination of cumulative trauma, poor posture, faulty body mechanics, stressful living and working habits, loss of flexibility and a general decline in physical fitness. The incidence of back pain and injury can be significantly reduced through correction and modification of these common causes of back pain and injury.”
